CCAP, US Foods, & Marcus Samuelson

This post was sponsored by US FOODS. The opinions are completely based on my own experience

Earlier this month I had the honor to be a part of the US Foods Scholars program event, created in partnership with C-CAP and Marcus Samuelsson. At first, I didn't realize just how special the program was, until I found out what they actually do. As part of the program, US Foods awards six C-CAP students a two year, $20,000 scholarship to help them continue their culinary education and pursue opportunities with US Foods. It really sets these kids up to be successful and helps give opportunities to some people who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

The #MakeItWithMarcus event was at Ginny's Supper Club in Harlem. Located under Red Rooster in Harlem, Ginny’s supper club Is the downstairs lounge and event space. Meeting Marcus, I could tell why it's such a destination. He introduced me to the band and showed me around the venue. Watching his energy and how he interacts with people, the food, and the ambiance he’s created was nothing short of special. The atmosphere, music, and food, all flowed into a wonderful, positive environment. The jazz feel, along with the speakeasy vibe, made for the perfect backdrop of the event. It was fun & upbeat, yet cool and low key somehow. There is a live jazz musician 3 to 4 days every week out of the year, which I thought was an amazing start for people looking to get into the music industry.

While I was there I met Leah Cohen too! This was really an amazing experience for me because she is one of THE pioneers in Filipino cuisine in New York City. I really respect what she's done for my culture and my food. When I first met her, I didn’t even realize that it was a famous chef, because she was so humble, fun, and kind. This entire event was a special networking experience and I couldn’t be more grateful to have been a part of it.

It was an amazing night all around. I got to meet two world-class, trailblazing chefs, and got to be a part of this really cool scholarship program. The partnership between US Foods & Marcus, the innovation, and the expertise they're providing to help both students and independent restaurants succeed, is something that should inspire everyone across the industry.
